Advanced Mobility Training Area (AMTA)
The AMTA is West Virginia National Guard’s premiere site for preparing tactical drivers and crews for the unique vehicles and challenging driving environments they will face while deployed. The AMTA was developed due to the lack of a Tactical Drivers training range that meets TC 7-31. Currently the AMTA is one of four approved for the Department of Defense. The training area will provide training for various different combat vehicles in conditions similar to the mountains of Afghanistan, including driving in challenging terrain, maintenance, advanced mobility, electronics, and weapon systems. The terrain can also be changed to mirror other countries that United States military forces may find themselves operating in. “It is an example of using our natural assets, of coal, terrain, and the tremendous ingenuity of our people to develop a world-class training facility. We have a wealth of combat experience in our state and are recognized nationally for our training. This course is designed, built and managed by West Virginians and will ensure American troops receive the most realistic training possible before they deploy to combat zones around the world.”-Major General Hoyer This is the first in a series of projects under the “Joint Base West Virginia” initiative which includes more potential projects on surface mine sites throughout the state. The AMTA training site was built in a partnership with Tyler Morgan and Pardee Resource Group. The land was part of a modern mining operation that continues today and is an example of a creative approach to concurrent land use that benefits the nation’s military and the local economy. “It is an example of using our natural assets, of coal, terrain, and the tremendous ingenuity of our people to develop a world-class training facility.
